THE CLASS

Designed to give the student a complete intro to the entire process from beginning to end. This intensive 4-day course is geared for the absolute beginner to someone who has experience in any of the disciplines that are covered in the course – Shooting, editing and writing.

DAY 1 we will begin with the camera fundamentals. Students will learn how to shoot using their DV cameras. If you have shot video in the past that’s helpful, but we may teach you a new thing or two about how to use your camera to capture professional caliber video. By the end of the class we will send you off with an assignment to capture video for your first project.

Day 2 begins by screening your footage for your first project. These critiques are essential to improving your skills and to give you feedback on your progress. After the screening we begin to look at Final Cut Pro, the editing tool we use in this course. If you have never edited before you will by the end of the course have covered the fundamentals of the editing process. The first editing lecture will cover the components of Final Cut, the interface basics and how to record the voiceover that accompany your video. After the lecture, students will then digitize their footage and begin cutting their videos together.

The final section of day 2 includes a screening of your first project for the class. Again, the screening will be followed by an in-class critique. These critiques are aimed at giving you feedback on your progress. When leaving the second day you'll be given an assignment of shooting the required footage for your second and final project in the class. The class will re-convene on Sunday at 1pm.

Day 3 will begin with students returning with footage they filmed outside of class. You will immediately begin editing the second project. A lecture will be given outlining how to mix your final audio. By the end off this class day students will have completed most of the project with finishing touches to be made on the final day before the class screening.

Day 4 the final day is designed to polish the final project before screening and critiques. There will be a lecture on the future of your new skills – the many job opportunities are opening up for producers, video journalists, digital correspondents and the like.
